"O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today if ye will hear his voice,"
Psalm 95:6-7 Throughout the Bible there is a phrase that is repeatedly written and when we read something in the Bible over and over again this is God’s way of telling us to pay attention, this is very important: Repeatedly man has “heard the voice of God.” Genesis 3:8, “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.” And they heard the voice of God! And then verse 10 again says: “And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.” Adam repeated that he had heard God’s voice. Listen! Numbers 7:89, “And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him.” Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. (There are many more scripture relating to hearing the voice of God and I’ve added them below for you.) These men are talking about hearing the voice of God. These are people in the Old Testament hearing the voice of God. But Jesus sacrificed His life so that we may be closer to God. Should we not also be hearing the voice of our Lord God? How many of you hear the voice of God? Listen! Beloved, if you are not hearing the voice of God then somethings not right, and it can only be 1 of 3 things: 1) Many of you believe that God only speaks to those that He chooses to speak to? You were made to believe that God speaks only to a chosen few. 2) You’re so busy doing your own thing you don’t have time for God. Sometimes we can be so busy, even in the church, but that busyness isn’t from God. How do you tell the difference? If you are so busy that you don’t have time to read your Word, to spend time in prayer, or just spend time talking with God…. Then you are too busy. Or… 3) You just don’t listen or don’t know how to listen. Listening is a learned technique. You not only have to close your mouth but you have to close your mind as well. You ever wonder why we have 1 mouth and 2 ears? Because hearing is far more important than talking. Listen… So let me set a few things straight. Because of Jesus dying on the cross for you so that you can have an intimate relationship with God, everyone is supposed to hear the voice of God. Not just your leaders in the church, but everyone. If you really want to hear his voice you will have to get past that lie first. Satan don’t want you to hear from God so he created the lie that only certain people can hear the voice of God. But it is every man’s God given right to be able to hear the voice of the Lord. And stop trying to decipher whether the quiet sound you hear is God speaking to you. The Word says we hear the voice of God. Let me tell you the definition of the word voice: Voice – a sound produced in the larynx and uttered through the mouth, to express something verbally in words. If it is a voice then it can be heard and it is coming from out of a mouth. Did God not make us in His own image? (Gen. 1:27) How do you hear? You hear with your ears. Now there is 3 ways in which God speaks to man: 1) Through our eyes (dreams, visions, & visual signs) 2) Through our hearts (a knowing of what is right and what is wrong) 3) Through our ears (speaking to us personally, hearing the voice of God) Job 33:14-17, "For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. 15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; 16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, 17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man." It all comes down to 1 thing. We must listen to hear the voice of God. I have heard God’s voice clearly and I have heard His voice as if it was being carried upon the wind speaking right into my spirit, but I heard the voice of God. Beloved, God is still speaking to you today. Let’s begin to work on our listening because everything God has to say to us is important. If we would but listen more, we will begin to make fewer mistakes in life. Set some alone time each day and practice listening. No speaking, no requests… just Listen! Be blessed!
